Tchemerzine-Scheler, V, 391; Willems, 545.
First Elzevir edition.
According to Tchemerzine it was printed in Amsterdam, whereas Willems indicates Leiden as the place of printing. It is augmented by two new pieces, notably: En quel obscur séjour… and Jamais ne pourray-je bannir.
“This attractive edition, printed by the Elzevier of Leiden and cited in the catal. offic. of 1644, marks an important phase in the constitution of Regnier’s text. Guided by French scholars and bibliophiles, the Elzeviers first removed the satires that Berthelot had appended to Regnier’s plays, and from these they also removed the dubious or repugnant pieces. At the same time they revised, completed and chastised the text” (see Willems).
Reprinted in 1652, the 1642 edition is much rarer.
A fine copy.
Provenance: François-Vincent Raspail (stamp on the half-title).
