Brunet, I, 406 : “50 exempl. sur pap. vélin et au moins un exemplaire sur pap. bleu” ; Gay-Lemonnyer, II, col. 46 ; see also Pia, col. 390-391 for a 1792 Rome edition.
Very rare edition printed in only 50 copies. This is probably the unique copy printed on blue paper.
Edition based on that of Grangé (Paris, 1757). The colophon indicates only copies on wove paper and makes no mention of coloured paper (‘ne sono stampati 50 esemplari in carta detta Vellin’). Brunet and Pia cite this edition with a title giving Rome as the place of printing, also from Girouard’s press. The present copy begins with the same dedication quoted by Pia to cardinals and other dignitaries.
Divided into two parts, the first contains 17 ‘dubbi’ with resolutions, followed by 26 ‘sonetti lussuriosi’.
Probably the only known copy printed on blue paper. A delightful copy of this Erotica printed on blue paper, bound in contemporary citron morocco.
Provenance: Paul Eugène, 2nd Count Lanjuinais (1799-1872; bookplate with the motto ‘Dieu et ses lois’). Paul Eugène Lanjuinais (1799-1872), eldest son of Jean-Denis, comte Lanjuinais (1753-1827), was a peer of France (1827-1848), knight (1831) then officer (1846) of the Légion d’honneur. He was awarded the Croix de Juillet and appointed General Councillor of Seine-et-Marne in 1833.
