First edition of the two catalogues of the sale of Sainte-Beuve’s library (1804-1869).
The first sale, held from March 21 to 26, 1870, covered 1,009 lots on the subjects of theology, history, fine arts, and literature.
Among the notable books in this sale are the first editions of Blaise Pascal’s Provinciales (lot 17), Victor Hugo’s Hernani (lot 551), and Vigny’s Servitude et grandeur militaires (lot 605).
The second sale took place from May 23 to 28, 1870, and included 805 lots, mainly on history and literature. There are many works inscribed to Sainte-Beuve or containing his annotations, such as Erckmann-Chatrian’s Histoire d’un conscrit (lot 336) and Montaigne’s Journal d’un voyage en Italie (lot 479).
A very fine copy.
