Brunet, IV, 562 (this copy) ; Brun, p.271 ; Harvard, Italian, 426; Speck, n° 591 ; Rothschild, I, 1026.
Second Janot edition of the prose translation first printed for Bathélémy Vérard in 1514. “Cette traduction, écrite en prose, est, croyons-nous, celle que divers manuscrits attribuent à Georges de La Forge, Bourbonnois” (Rothschild). “Il s’agit de la version longue, sans doute rédigée sur la base du commentaire de Bernardo Ilicino” (Jean Balsamo). Illustration comprises 6 allegorical woodcuts in the manner of Geoffroy Tory preceding each respective chapter. These allegories are completed by 144 text woodcuts, which Brun divides into 3 series: “qui peuvent se répartir en trois séries : une suite, de qualité ordinaire; une autre suite, avec double filet, d’une facture nerveuse et élégante, tracée au trait ; une troisième, de même style, n’ayant qu’un simple filet”.
The large woodcut on leaf 158v shows Bathsbeba bathing.
Small marginal restoration to last leaf , else a very attractive copy.
Provenance: Mac-Carthy Reagh (sale, Paris, 1815, lot 3067).
