Ron, Bibliotheca Tinctoria, p. 248 et n°0060 (under Baillot); not in Neville or Cole.
First edition.
A copy of the resale of the original edition with a new title.
Louis-Sébastien Lenormand (1757-1839) was a renowned chemist and Lavoisier’s assistant, responsible in particular for the production of nitre, an essential element in the manufacture of gunpowder.
“During the revolution he was in charge of niter production for the manufacture of gundpowder. Later he became professor of chemistry at the École Centrale, Paris” (Neville). Ron quotes this title as a supplement to the Nouveau manuel du teinturier by Baillot (Paris 1819), specifying that “Lenormand’s book, an extract of which is added to Baillot’s (pp. 161-322) is claimed to be unpublished, but in the same year (1819) a 1st and 2nd edition were listed in the catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale, and a 3rd noted in 1826”.
Beginning with 147 articles on how to remove stains of all kinds from any surface, the work continues with details on the treatment of paper (bleaching old paper, how to remove grease stains, ink stains, etc.), and ends with a very detailed index, which occupies pages 159-191.
