He gives many details of the voyage to Brazil, including a stopover in the Canary Islands and then along the coast of Cape Verde. He mentions the return journey to Le Havre and his fears regarding disputes between the shipowner and the captain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Another hazard mentioned is the British, who were then fighting against slavery via the <i>West Africa Squadron<\/i>: &#8220;on court la chance d&#8217;\u00eatre pris par les Anglais et d&#8217;\u00eatre fait prisonnier car ces Messieurs craignent que l&#8217;on fasse la traite des n\u00e8gres, ce qui n&#8217;emp\u00eache pas qu&#8217;on en am\u00e8ne tous les jours \u00e0 Bahia dans de petits navires o\u00f9 il y en a jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 cinq six cents&#8221;. The British West Africa Squadron fought against the Atlantic slave trade by patrolling the coast of Africa. It is worth noting, for example, that HMS Black Joke, which joined the squadron after its capture in 1827, was originally a Brazilian slave ship, the Henriquetta, belonging to the Bahia slave trader Jos\u00e9 de Cerqueira Lima.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">In the 1830s and 1840s, Bahia (Salvador) was one of Brazil&#8217;s major slave trading centres. Despite the legal ban on the slave trade in 1831, the region remained an important destination for African captives as part of a trade that had gone underground.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">Alexandre Deschamps then goes on to describe Brazil in picturesque terms, noting in particular the fertility of the land (<i>\u00abBahia est le meilleur sol de tout le Br\u00e9sil pour la canne \u00e0 sucre \u00bb<\/i> ; [\u201cBahia has the best soil in all of Brazil for sugar cane\u201d]), and provides details of the landscapes: characterised by the presence \u00ab <i>de haies de cactus et de toutes sortes de champs (&#8230;), des bois d&#8217;orangers, de citronniers, de bambous, de mimosas, de jasmins, (&#8230;) de passiflores et de cafetiers<\/i> ; [\u201cof hedges of cacti and all manner of fields (\u2026), groves of orange and lemon trees, bamboo, mimosas, jasmine, (\u2026) passionflowers and coffee trees<i>\u201d<\/i>] \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\">The young man is not immune to the racist stereotypes of his time: in his opinion, Brazilians are &#8220;tr\u00e8s d\u00e9bauch\u00e9s&#8221; because &#8220;ils ont tous deux ou trois n\u00e9gresses pour ma\u00eetresses&#8221;[<i>very debauched\u2019<\/i> because <i>\u2018they all have two or three black women as mistresses\u2019<\/i>]. .
