The district was formed in December 1859, under the orders of Sir Charles Trevelyan&#8217;s government in British India. This book explores the history of India before the British Empire, from the earliest times through to the Mohammedan, French and finally British periods. After a historical overview, Mackenzie gives details of each part of the district (he lists 11 parts or \u201cTaluq\u201d), before moving on to geology, meteorology and religions.
