Extremely rare Lyon edition of Jacques Vincent’s translation into French of an anonymous Spanish text. Born in Crest Arnaud in the Dauphin\u00e9, Jacques Vincent was secretary to the bishop of Le Puy. Brunet describes a first French translation printed by Michel Fezandat in Paris in 1554, followed by another dated 1561.<\/p>\n
The present edition of 1596 remained unknown to him, but he indicates that the following one, printed in 1597, also by Rigaud, served in 1777 as a model for the text which appears in the Biblioth\u00e8que des romans<\/i>. The bibliographer adds in his note for the Spanish edition of 1512: \u00ab Il est difficile de dire aujourd\u2019hui avec certitude, si cet ouvrage est une imitation de J. Boccace, ou si, comme l\u2019a cru M. de Tressan, il est tir\u00e9 d\u2019un po\u00e8me espagnol plus ancien que Boccace \u00bb. Ga\u00eblle Bourg is more precise : \u00ab Jacques Vincent traduit un texte espagnol anonyme, imprim\u00e9 \u00e0 Alcala de Henares par Arnao Guillem de Brocar en 1512 (et peut-\u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 avant, d\u00e8s la fin du XVe si\u00e8cle) qui constitue, selon G. Reynier, \u00ab une adaptation tr\u00e8s r\u00e9duite de notre Flores et Blanchefleur <\/i>\u00bb. Il fait donc repasser en France le \u00ab vieux roman \u00bb, r\u00e9duit par l\u2019adaptation espagnole. Il y ajoute la traduction du roman de Juan de Segura (Queja y aviso contra Amor<\/i>), lui-m\u00eame imprim\u00e9, dans sa version d\u2019origine, \u00e0 la suite d\u2019un autre texte (Processo de cartas de amores que entre dos amantes pasaron<\/i>) et donn\u00e9 comme tir\u00e9 du grec, mise en sc\u00e8ne \u00e9ditoriale permettant de recommander l\u2019ouvrage aux lecteurs \u00bb (Ga\u00eblle Bourg. \u00c9ditions lyonnaises des romans du XVIe si\u00e8cle).<\/p>\n
The translator’s name is to be found on the first pages of the introduction : \u00ab Ode \u00e0 Maistre Jacques Vincent, sur l\u2019augmentation de nostre langue fran\u00e7oise. Par Pierre Tredehan d\u2019Angers<\/i> \u00bb. Pages 165 until the end contain under a separate title \u00ab La complainte et avis, que fait Luzindaro, prince d\u2019Aethiopie : \u00e0 l\u2019encontre d\u2019amour, & d\u2019une dame : continu\u00e9e jusques \u00e0 leur fin. Mise de grec en castillan. Puis translatee en francoys, par Jacques Vincent du Crest Arnauld en Dauphin\u00e9, aumonier de monsieur le comte d\u2019Anguien <\/i>\u00bb.<\/p>\n
Of this edition we have been able to locate only two institutional copies, one at the Municipal Library in Besan\u00e7on, and one at Houghton Library, Harvard.<\/p>\n
Very nice copy, exquisitely bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet. Printed marginalia on leaf 15 slihgtly shaved.<\/p>\n
