First French edition, translated by Senebier.

Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799) was the first to fully elucidate the mechanism of reproduction in amphibians, and carried out the first artificial fertilisations with dogs. He discovered that vertebrate reproduction requires a spermatozoon and an ovum. The three engraved plates illustrate his experiments on the fertilisation of batrachian eggs.

Senebier, by translating most of his publications, greatly contributed to the spread of his work in France.

Fine copy.
