The Bibliothèque nationale de France attributes this work to the Creole François Laplace, a colonist from Saint-Domingue, owner of a coffe plantation and defender of the cause of slavery. Other probable authors are François Barbé de Marbois and Michel-Étienne Descourtilz.
This work is a first-hand account of the revolution in Saint-Domingue from September 1789 until the author’s flight in 1793, as described in his preface.
The work begins with a brief description of this colony (pp. 1-118): colonial regime, foundation and division of the colony, geology, inhabitants and towns. It is followed by a very detailed description of the state of Saint Domingue under the despotic Ancien Régime (La Luzerne, Duchilleau, Marbois), then relates with great precision the insurrectionary movements of the revolutionaries, details on the brigands named Coco-Michel, Macaia, Pierrot, etc. The work ends with a postscript on the appalling massacre at Fort-Dauphin.
The engraved map does not bear any indication to any author. It is titled: Carte de l’Isle de St. Domingue une des grandes Antilles, Colonie françoise et espagnole. It shows in the north-west part a portion of Cuba.
Very rare; Sabin mentions this work only in the footnote for item no. 3312 on Réflexions sur la colonie de Saint-Domingue (Paris 1796) by Barbé-Marbois.
Very good copy albeit rare ocasional foxing.
