Translated from Latin by Puiseux.

Hoffmann (1660-1740) was First Physician to the King of Prussia and taught medicine, chemistry and anatomy at the University of Hall.

“This work contains the author’s most important chemical works. Hoffmann opposed the iatrochemical views of Sylvius and Tachenius. He invented ‘Hoffman’s Anodyne’ still in use in the British Pharmacopoeia. Hoffmann’s experimental investigations were largely concerned with the examination of mineral waters and he did much towards perfecting the analytical methods of his time” (Duveen).
