Gauss, who wrote the introduction, had great admiration for Eisenstein (1823-1853), whom he compared directly with Archimedes and Newton. Collection of the author’s most important treatises, including Neue Theoreme der höhern Arithmetik.
“In September 1847 a great honor came to Eisenstein : Gauss wrote the preface to a volume of his collected treatises. No longer extant, is the letter from Gauss to Eisenstein in which, the latter reported to Riemann, Gauss set down the essentials of his proof of the biquadratic reciprocity law with the aid of cyclotomy” (DSB).
A few rare foxing.
