DSB, V, 259-165.
First edition of the works of Évariste Galois (1811-1832).
Some of the articles were published in 1846 by Liouville in the Journal des Mathématiques pures during Galois’s lifetime (he died at the age of 20).
It begins with the articles published by Galois : 1. Démonstration d’un théorème sur les fractions continues périodiques. 2. Notes sur quelques points d’analyse. 3. Analyse d’un mémoire sur la résolution algébrique des équations. 4. Note sur la résolution des équations numériques. 5. Sur la théorie des Nombres.
These articles are followed by his posthumous works : 1. Lettre à Auguste Chevalier. 2. Mémoire sur les conditions de résolubilité des équations radicaux. 3. Des équations primitives qui sont solubles par radicaux.
“There have been few mathematicians with personalities as engaging as that of Galois, who died at the age of twenty years and seven months from wounds received in a mysterious duel. He left a body of work – for the most part published posthumously – of less than 100 pages, the astonishing richness of which was revealed in the second half of the nineteenth century. Far from being a cloistered scholar, this extraordinarily precocious and exceptionally profound genius had an extremely tormented life” (DSB).
